The message of this movie was for those of us in life who are chasing dreams. With over 1,000,000 views on youtube from a clip of the speech shows the effectiveness of this speech. ![]() This shows that he believed what he told his son and he acted upon this himself and succeeded. Background played the largest role of this speech as Smith even overcame his own difficulties financially during this movie. ![]() His background was not one of success or wealth which his son was envisioning which caused him to believe that his son would not endure that path either. Background also played a role in Smith telling his son that he would not succeed in basketball. Although background and where you come from are important, anyone can make it anywhere if they choose so and that message was conveyed to his son. All of these factors played a role in this powerful speech in which he told his son. This was due to Will Smith losing his job, divorcing his wife, being evicted, losing his job, and more. Like stated earlier, the two characters were going a very rough financial state. The background is another vital rhetorical aspect in analyzing the speech. The setting of this movie and speech not only gave a sense of why Smith said what he said, but also why he changed his mind and told his son to chase him dreams. This will do a lot to a person, physically and mentally due to a great amount of stress. They had slept in homeless shelters, and also been evicted from their own home. Smith and his son were going through a rough time financially, and their living conditions were not good at all. Setting in this story played a huge role. This self-conflict that Will Smith was facing is due to the setting and background of the story which I will get into more detail later. After seeing his son make a jump shot he realized that he was never able to excel at the sport personally and this triggered him saying some things that he later regretted. The argument in this speech was one of self-conflict with Will Smith. All three elements of ethos, logos, and pathos were apparent in this speech. He gave a logical argument to prove that his son wouldn’t be the best of basketball players. Logos was included in the logic behind telling his son that he wouldn’t be good. Also while telling his son that he was wrong he himself was the one experiencing severe emotions such as guilt and sorrow. While he told his son that he wouldn’t turn out to be good he was tapping in to his sons emotions which caused his son to act as he did. Pathos was also in this short speech in both the part where he told his son that he will not be a good basketball player as well as when he decided to tell his son to never let anyone tell him that he can’t do anything. This sense of credibility provided everything he needed to have his audience, which was his son believe and listen to what he spoke as credible. His son never questioned what he said, he just accepted it and went on even though he didn’t like what he was hearing. An analysis of the “Pursuit of Happyness” speech showed an effective way to give a speech and reveal a positive message.Įthos was apparent in this passage while Will Smith talked to his son and he earned respect because he is a figure of authority to his son. ![]() Elements such as ethos, pathos, logos, and the argument of the speech all were apparent. I came across many rhetorical elements in which I gave my thoughts on. While analyzing a clip from the “Pursuit of Happyness” The reason that I chose this clip is because of the message it gives, I completely support this message and I believe that the speech was given very effectively. His son then in anger throws the ball and this triggered a quick speech which Smith gave telling his son to never let someone you can’t do anything. ![]() He tells his son to not spend all of his time on the basketball court because he’ll probably end up being as good as he himself was which was not good at all. His son shoots and makes a basket and starts chanting “I’m going pro!” and afterwards Will Smith gives his thoughts on his sons statement. This clip entails a father (Will Smith) and his son out on a basketball court. The artifact in which I chose to rhetorically analyze happens to be a clip from one of my favorite movies, “The Pursuit of Happyness”.
